Solar Powered Gate Systems Questions

Every question we get asked about solar powered gate systems, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

  • Will a solar system keep working after several cloudy days in a row?

Yes, if the battery reserve is sized for consecutive low-sun days. The installer calculates how many overcast days the battery can cover at your gate’s cycle count. A system sized only for average sun will fail during a smoke event or a run of winter overcast.

  • How long does a solar gate battery usually last?

A deep-cycle battery typically lasts 3 to 5 years. Life shortens when the battery is regularly drained below 50 percent capacity. Slow operation or failure to open after cloudy weather usually signals a battery that has lost capacity and needs replacement.

  • What size solar panel does a gate opener need?

Panel wattage depends on the operator’s current draw, daily cycle count, and the site’s effective sun hours. A gate that opens 20 times a day on a shaded post needs a larger panel than one that opens four times in full sun. The installer calculates the minimum output for your specific setup.

  • What causes a solar gate system to stop working?

The most common causes are a weak or failing battery, a dirty or shaded panel, loose wiring at the terminals, or a charge controller that has failed. A battery voltage check and panel output test narrow down the cause quickly without replacing parts at random.

  • Do I need a keypad as well as a remote?

A keypad is useful for guests, deliveries, or anyone who does not carry a remote. Both draw minimal current and are included in the load calculation, so adding a keypad does not require a larger panel or battery.

  • Is solar a good option when the gate post is far from the house?

It is often the most practical option. Trenching conduit along a long entry road on steep Foothills terrain is expensive and disruptive. A solar system with a deep-cycle battery avoids the trench entirely and works independently of the home’s utility connection.
