Industrial Security Gates Questions

Every question we get asked about industrial security gates, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

  • What is an industrial security gate actually used for?

It controls vehicle entry at a commercial driveway, yard, or loading area. Most sites want to stop unauthorized traffic and reduce the need for on-site staffing at the entrance. Automated access control handles both without a guard.

  • Which gate type works when space is tight?

A sliding gate is the standard answer when swing clearance is limited. The leaf travels parallel to the fence line, so it needs no clear arc in front of or behind the opening. The installer confirms available slide run during the site assessment.

  • What happens if I delay replacing a worn-out gate?

An out-of-alignment gate puts asymmetric load on the operator every cycle. The operator fails faster, and a gate that does not close fully leaves the perimeter open overnight. Replacing worn hardware before the operator fails avoids a more expensive combined repair.

  • Is an automated gate worth it for a smaller storefront?

Storefronts use security gates to reduce after-hours break-in risk and limit vehicle access to loading areas. The right setup depends on opening width and how much access control the business needs, it does not have to be a large or complex system.

  • What does the site assessment check before hardware is specified?

The installer measures clear opening width, checks available swing or slide clearance, estimates daily traffic volume, and confirms access control requirements. Site conditions, slope, surface, and power availability, also affect which gate type and operator are specified.

  • Are there safety compliance requirements for automated commercial gates?

Yes. UL 325 sets the standard for automated gate operators in the US, covering safety reverse mechanisms, entrapment protection, and control board requirements. Every commercial install should meet UL 325 before the gate is put into service.
